FIVP releases response to CMA issues statement

The Federation of Independent Veterinary Practices (FIVP) has published its response to the Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA’s) issues statement.

In its response, FIVP raises its concerns about the impact corporatisation has had on the veterinary profession. Corporatisation has contributed to changes in the industry’s culture, professional freedom and the importance of client relationships.

FIVP has been actively engaged in the investigation and looks forward to contributing further. The insights provided by FIVP will give the CMA valuable perspectives on the challenges and dynamics within the veterinary sector.

Rita Dingwall, FIVP business development manager, said: “We are glad to see that the CMA is approaching its investigation in a fair, evidence-based manner. We will continue to work closely with them to ensure they develop an accurate representation of the veterinary industry moving forward.

“If any of our members have any additional insights or concerns, we encourage them to get in touch.”

Key elements of FIVP’s response:

Appreciation for the CMA’s approach

FIVP appreciates that the CMA has taken a fair and open-minded approach in its enquiries, particularly in not assuming guilt on any party. It supports the authority’s inclusion of veterinary services within its scope.

It is also grateful that the CMA has focused on engaging with independent practices. FIVP expects all of its member practices to adhere to RCVS guidelines on communication, consent and pricing transparency.

FIVP recognises the need for clear communication with clients and the importance of maintaining animal welfare and professional integrity.

Challenges faced by independent practices

FIVP wishes to bring the everyday challenges and successes faced by independent practices to the CMA’s attention. As such, it asks that independent practices are given sufficient notice before on-site visits.

It highlights a trend of clients registering at multiple practices and the impact of consumer choice and research on choosing a veterinary practice. FIVP also raises concern about how corporate incentives are affecting consumer choices and how online pharmacies are impacting independent practices.

The Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966

FIVP is in support of a review of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 and addressing barriers to entry in the sector.
