FIVP member Westport Veterinary Clinic has become the first UK veterinary practice to take part in a new campaign to provide animals dignity in death.
The Bassinet Project, which is led by not-for-profit organisation Holly’s Hugs, aims to provide pet owners with a peaceful way to transport their pets home after they have passed away.
The practice will be trialling a new bassinet, carefully designed to make the process as dignified and respectful as possible. This includes handles placed specifically to support those carrying the bassinet, whether it is one person or a pair.
The new bassinets
Packed within the new bassinet is a collection of waterproof blankets, a small pillow, and a handmade crochet blanket cover. Each bassinet is finished with a single red rose and a sign, which reads ‘Forever Loved’.
The current design is only suitable for smaller pets, however Holly’s Hugs is now working to create a new bassinet for larger animals.
Stuart McMorrow, Westport Veterinary Clinic owner and vet, said: “We are trialling a basket that is suitable for small dogs and cats and are hoping to have ones in the future for all sizes of our patients. It will be a much nicer way for us to show the respect our patients deserve when it comes to the end of their time with us.”
Holly’s Hugs
Lesley Winton launched Holly’s Hugs in memory of her rescue dog Holly, who died in 2013. The charity now raises money for dogs in need and promotes awareness of the challenges of pet bereavement.
She presented Westport Veterinary Clinic with a custom-made bassinet and is hoping that more veterinary practices will get involved with the scheme.
Lesley said: “The first design of the bassinet will be suitable for small animals, so I am now looking to create one double the size for larger animals. I very much hope that as many veterinary practices in Scotland and the UK as possible will invest in one of these bassinets to help their clients cope with one of the hardest days of their lives.”
