FIVP’s preliminary response to CMA’s working papers

The CMA published its series of ‘working papers’ last week which sets out its current assessment and emerging views as it undertakes its Market Investigation into UK veterinary services for household pets.

As one of the main parties within the CMA investigation, the Federation of Independent Veterinary Practices (FIVP) will be publishing its formal response in due course.

FIVP Business Development Managers Rita Dingwall and Ian Wolstenholme have welcomed the CMA’s recognition of the ‘dedication and commitment to pet owners and their animals shown by individual vets and vet nurses’, reflected in its pet owner survey where 88% of respondents agreed that their vet focused on the highest standard of care for their pet’s health.

Rita said: “The CMA clearly have been listening to concerns raised by FIVP and others and in their overview document appear to understand the complex nature of the veterinary sector. The overarching consideration in this process is animal welfare and FIVP will continue to press this point in the many nuances of the investigation”.

Ian also welcomed the CMA’s clear recognition of the urgent need for veterinary legislative reform to replace the outdated Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966.

FIVP alongside BSAVA, BVNA and BVA will give oral evidence to the CMA at a formal hearing in March.
