The Federation of Independent Veterinary Practices (FIVP) and the Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons (SPVS) have collaborated to submit a joint response to the Competition and Markets Authority’s working paper of suggested ‘remedies’.

The report explores the impact of the CMA’s proposals from the perspective of independent veterinary practices. Through a comprehensive survey of SPVS members and consultation with FIVP’s members, we sought to examine how each remedy would impact those working in independent practice.

Our report concludes that CMA’s remedies will have a disproportionately negative impact on independent practices.

We found that many of the proposed remedies, such as mandatory prescriptions and price comparison, risked significant burden on smaller independent practices. This would not only lead to administrative overload and reduced profitability, but could also result in increased costs for clients.

We also suggest that an over-emphasis on price transparency could contribute to the erosion of the vet-client-pet relationship. Compassion and understanding are core values in many independent practices, however mandated price transparency could turn veterinary care into a purely transactional interaction.

FIVP and SPVS continue to advocate for client education and choice, and support such measures which create a level playing field for independent practices.

However, we believe that any measures should be carefully phased to help independent practices through the transition. For example, we found that members supported the development of a Client Information website that would inform clients how to get the best for their pets and their veterinary practice.

Rita Dingwall, chair of FIVP, said: “This joint effort highlights the unique position and challenges faced by independent veterinary practices in light of the proposed remedies.

“Together, we have worked diligently to articulate the critical role that independent practices have in providing tailored high-quality care for our communities.”

Our response is the result of significant collaboration with SPVS, inspired by our shared dedication to a sustainable future for independent practices. FIVP would like to thank the team at SPVS for their continued support throughout the CMA’s investigation.

We encourage our members to get in touch if they have any questions about the CMA enquiry or our responses.
