Business owner mental health – don’t bury your head in the sand

Looking after your own mental health and wellbeing as a business owner can be all too easy a point to ignore and brush under the carpet when you have so much else to consider. However, it is important to look after yourself so you are in a strong position to look after your team and business.

Here are some simple things you can do to help with this:

  • Take control of your working hours where possible. Start by taking time away from emails and other admin tasks in the evenings. Technology can blur working boundaries and never allow you time to ‘switch off’.
  • Think about what you can outsource. It’s all too easy to try and control everything but building a strong team around you can help relieve pressure from you and can even help empower your team!
  • Take a project management approach to wellbeing. Take a few moments to write down tasks you need to complete that are weighing on your mind. This can help you to work through and prioritise them as well as reducing your mental load.
  • Try to stay present. We can learn from the past but we can’t change it and we can plan for the future but we can’t control it, so don’t waste too much time and energy worrying about it!
  • Attend networking/CPD events. It is hard to find the time, however, talking to others in the same position can help you to feel you are not alone and you may even pick up some helpful advice.
