The opening of Dalehead Veterinary Group’s new Skipton branch on 3 October 2026 marked a milestone celebration for the practice, coinciding with its 100th anniversary. Located on a modern business estate chosen for its excellent accessibility and parking, the new branch combines traditional practice values with modern facilities.

Ready to welcome the local community

Practice Director Peter O’Hagan highlighted the significance of the occasion and the long build-up to the opening:

“It’s good to finally be open and welcome clients in the door… We’ve put on a nice celebration to mark the 100th anniversary of Dalehead and the opening of the new practice.”

Reflecting on the practice’s place in the local community, Dr O’Hagan emphasised their independent ethos:

“We’re locally owned, we’re locally based… the team we’ve built as well are very keen on that independent ethos, so that’s our intention going forward is to keep that going and stay grounded.”

Addressing the recent industry scrutiny and regulatory oversight by the CMA, Dr O’Hagan noted that while added administrative processes increase workloads, the practice remains focused on delivering high-quality first-opinion mixed care. He added that the gradual “slow launch” over the preceding month allowed the new team to settle into the facility before the official open day.

Enthusiasm from the nursing and clinical team

Members of the nursing and clinical staff shared their enthusiasm regarding the expanded roles of veterinary nurses and the state-of-the-art branch facilities.

Veterinary Nurse Joe highlighted the active, client-facing roles nurses fulfil – ranging from second vaccinations and weight clinics to six-month health checks, alongside traditional surgical duties:

“The new building and investment in some superb equipment is definitely a brilliant thing to be able to have access to.”

Harriet, a Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) with five years’ experience at Dalehead, discussed the importance of transparent advice and strong client relationships:

“Providing an excellent customer service is second to none to our team… happy customers, happy pets, and that’s what being in a vet practice is all about.”

Farm Director Ian Illingworth spoke on the evolving nature of farm practice, emphasising collaborative health planning alongside traditional emergency calls. Highlighting the rewarding nature of farm work for future veterinarians, he added:

“It’s all about the people, and it’s all about the relationships.  Farm work is where you get the full exposure to veterinary medicine.”

Special Guest Appearance

The ribbon-cutting honours were performed by special guest Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards, who arrived in a vintage 100-year-old vehicle.  Reflecting on his invitation and the practice’s history, the 1988 Calgary Winter British Olympics Team celebrity noted:

“It’s really nice that a practice like Dalehead is still an independent veterinary practice, and been around for 90 years.  It looks a fabulous place.”

The event also featured a demonstration by local Mountain Rescue search dog “Kes” and handler Andy, plus a fun dog show, underlining Dalehead’s ongoing support for local working dogs and community services.

The opening event successfully brought together local clients, practice staff, and community members to usher in a new chapter for Dalehead Veterinary Group.
